A new Leger poll found that 40 per cent of Canadians are concerned about losing their job in the next 12 months as the U.S. wages a trade war with the country.
More than 1,500 adults (18 years of age and older) completed an online survey between March 7 to March 10.
Key findings
- 46 per cent of Canadians report living paycheque to paycheque.
- Job security concerns by surveyed areas: Ontario (53 per cent), British Columbia (39 per cent), Manitoba/Saskatchewan (39 per cent), Alberta (35 per cent), Quebec (26 per cent), and Atlantic Canada (23 per cent).
- 44 per cent of men are concerned about unemployment, compared to 36 per cent of women.
- 74 per cent of respondents are in favour of the federal government responding with reciprocal tariffs to any duties imposed by the U.S. on Canadian imports.
- Two thirds of Canadians have reduced their purchases of American products, both in stores (68 per cent) and online (65 per cent).
- 81 per cent of respondents report having “good” or “excellent” mental health despite the current economic conditions.
