Pension Credit could be worth as much as £3,900 to older people but is frequent passed up.
Reasons for this include people not being aware of what they are entitled to or assuming they won’t qualify because they have too much money.
But experts say it’s always worth checking.
Pension Credit is worth at least £227 a week for a single person and £346 for couples.
The Government has been attempting to increase awareness of the benefit over recent months, particularly as it is now the gateway to receiving the Winter Fuel Payment.
The DWP has pointed out people could still be eligible even if they have savings or own their own home.
They explained: “Pension Credit gives you extra money to help with your living costs if you’re over state pension age and on a low income.
“Pension Credit can also help with housing costs such as ground rent or service charges.
“You might get extra help if you’re a carer, severely disabled, or responsible for a child or young person.
“Pension Credit is separate from your state pension.
“You can get Pension Credit even if you have other income, savings or own your own home.”
