This March, local charity Age UK Norfolk is encouraging us to consider what this looks like for our future.
Head of Information and Advice, Emma Harkness, points out the importance of planning for later life conversations: “Many can be reluctant to consider later life and decisions that might need to be made about themselves or a friend or family member, but it is important to have these conversations so wishes can be shared and appropriate actions taken. There are many areas to consider, including housing, accessibility, finances, care, and legal matters such as wills. One key area we are focusing on is Lasting Power of Attorney.”
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a vital tool that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf should you become unable to do so yourself due to illness or injury. There are two types of LPA: one for health and welfare decisions and another for property and financial affairs. By planning ahead, you ensure that, in the event of a life or health event, someone will be able to manage your affairs in accordance with your wishes, ensuring your well-being and avoiding unnecessary delays.
This month, Age UK Norfolk is focusing on raising awareness about LPAs, specifically asking the question: Are you 50 and over and do you have one? Many people do not. However, there may come a time when someone is no longer able to make or communicate their decisions. Having an LPA in place can make things much easier if that time comes – so it’s worth considering now.
Without an LPA, your loved ones might face the challenging and costly process of applying to the court for a guardianship order to manage your affairs. This can be both time-consuming and stressful for all involved. By putting an LPA in place now, you give yourself control over who makes those important decisions and reduce the burden on your family in the future.
Despite the benefits, many people avoid thinking about an LPA due to a lack of understanding or reluctance to face such a sensitive issue. However, Emma Harkness encourages everyone to take action: “It’s important to have these conversations early so that when the time comes, your family is prepared, and your wishes are respected.”

Their trained advisers can guide you through the process of setting up an LPA, explaining who an attorney can be, and outlining the costs involved. For those on a low income, there may be reduced or no fees. You can set up an LPA yourself using paper or online forms, or you may choose to consult a solicitor. Age UK Norfolk also offers a free form completion service in Norfolk for those who meet specific eligibility criteria, providing further support in this crucial area of planning.
