A BOMB SQUAD rendered the explosive device safe in the red pickup truck at the entrance to the American Tower 340-foot guyed structure. Authorities said that the individual in custody was upset over employment issues, but would not state whether it was with the tower owner or one of the tenants on the guyed tower.
Brevard County, Florida, authorities are investigating a suspected pipe bomb discovered during a search of a suspicious vehicle on Friday near a communications tower in Mims. The incident prompted a road closure and a large response from local agencies.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said the situation began when a deputy responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked near Deering Parkway Road, in the vicinity of U.S. 1 and Interstate 95. After questioning the driver, whose statements reportedly didn’t match observed circumstances, deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located what appeared to be an explosive device.
The county’s bomb squad was deployed to the scene, and a section of County Road 5A was temporarily closed. The device was later rendered safe, and the suspect was taken into custody. No injuries or damage were reported.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey said the explosive appeared to be a pipe bomb and emphasized that the incident is not being treated as terrorism. “This appears to be a very isolated incident with an individual that was angry over some employment issues,” Ivey stated. He added that the target appeared to be a nearby state radio tower.
While Ivey described the structure as a state-owned tower, records indicate that American Tower Corporation owns the 340-foot communications tower. The tower is leased to multiple tenants, including government agencies and mobile network carriers.
Investigators are now working with federal partners to determine the suspect’s intent and whether any broader threat exists. Formal charges are expected to be filed.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has not yet responded to Wireless Estimator’s request for further details. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
