By committing to the pension triple lock, the Government will increase the basic and new state pension by 4.1 per cent.
The triple lock ensures the state pension will rise annually by the highest of inflation, average wages, or 2.5 per cent.
This news comes after a winter in which thousands of pensioners across the county missed out on their £300 fuel payments.
Mid Cheshire’s Labour MP Andrew Cooper welcomed the state pension rise, which he believes marks a significant step towards restoring financial security for older residents who have faced real challenges in recent years.
He said: “I speak to pensioners every week who are worried about the cost of living, whether their pensions will stretch far enough, and how they’ll manage through another winter.
“That’s why I’m proud this Labour Government is putting those concerns front and centre.
“Thousands of older people in Mid Cheshire will see a meaningful boost in their income – because we are keeping our promise to protect the triple lock and stand by pensioners.”
The Labour Government has committed to maintaining the triple lock throughout this Parliament.
In August 2024, there were 1,622 pensioners in Mid Cheshire claiming Pension Credit.
And, due to the Government putting a renewed focus on improving the take-up, almost 50,000 more pensioners across the UK are now receiving the support they are entitled to.
Mr Cooper added: “Too many older people are still missing out on support they qualify for.
“Pension Credit can top up your income and open the door to other help – like a free TV licence, council tax support, and warm home discounts.
“If you’re not sure whether you qualify, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office or check online. You’ve paid in, and you deserve to get the support you need.”
As part of a wider effort to ease the pressure on older people, the Government is also:
- extending the Household Support Fund with £742 million, helping local councils support pensioners with energy bills, food costs and other essentials;
- delivering the £150 Warm Home Discount for low-income households;
- maintaining Winter Fuel Payments, worth up to £300 per household;
- investing £22.6 billion more in the NHS to cut waiting times and improve care;
- boosting retirement savings through pension reforms set to grow lifetime pension pots by an average of £11,000;
- and increasing support for carers, including the ‘largest ever’ cash rise in the Carer’s Allowance earnings threshold.
Mr Cooper said: “After too many years of broken promises and short-term thinking, we’re seeing real action.
“I will continue using my role to speak up for older people in Mid Cheshire and ensure your voice is heard loud and clear in Parliament.”
