KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Applications are being accepted for three open roles at Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
As of Monday, the department is searching for three public safety officers to serve in full-time roles, according to the City of Kalamazoo’s employment opportunities website.
“Serving as a Public Safety Officer is a meaningful career with a competitive salary, great benefits, and many opportunities to advance,” public safety officers wrote online. “During recruiting periods, KDPS accepts applications from any interested candidates that have a heart for service. No experience is necessary for applicants hired during these periods as KDPS will provide paid training.”
How can I qualify to work with Kalamazoo Public Safety?
To be considered for employment, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Must be 21 years old at the time of appointment
- Pass a written and physical test, and undergo an extensive background investigation

Starting wages:
- Recruits (no experience) and Police Academy Graduates: $53,093.04 + overtime opportunities
- Experienced police officers (full/part time MCOLES certified or be able to be certified through RPTE program) or Firefighter I and II (full time and licensed MFR): $59,426.64 (less than 1 year of service) to $68,708.64 (3 years or more of completed service)
Paid to train:
- Recruits are paid full-time, hourly wages to attend all basic training, including the Police Academy, Fire Academy, MFR Academy, Advanced Police Academy, and Field Training Officer Program. All tuition, feels, uniform and equipment and provided/paid for by KDPS.
Residency bonus:
- Recruits receive an annual $5,000 residency bonus for living with the City of Kalamazoo; restrictions apply
Student Loan Forgiveness program:
- KDPS is an eligible employer for the federal student loan forgiveness program
Additional benefits:
- Spanish language bonus, longevity payments, shift differential pay (starting at 12 p.m.), 13 paid holidays, assignment bonuses and more
