Charles Hudson, managing partner at Precursor Ventures, is reevaluating his investment strategies in light of evolving pressures in the venture capital landscape. According to a recent report, Hudson’s analysis revealed that selling portfolio companies at the Series B stage could yield a fund with returns north of 3x, prompting a shift in his portfolio management approach.

Hudson’s insights come at a time when limited partners (LPs) are increasingly demanding interim liquidity, a trend exacerbated by the drying up of steady venture returns and the allure of more liquid investment options. This shift is not unique to Hudson’s fund; across the industry, venture funds are becoming more strategic about generating liquidity, with some hiring dedicated staff to explore alternative options.

Smaller funds like Precursor Ventures, which has a history of backing unconventional founders, face particular pressure. Unlike mega-funds that can afford to wait for massive outcomes, smaller funds must be more tactical about when to realize returns. This is further complicated by the changing dynamics with LPs, who now have competing needs and preferences regarding the timing of returns.
