The Wall Street JournalSue Helper, the Frank Tracy Carlton Professor of Economics, noted that manufacturing once dominated U.S. jobs—an early lead that came from innovation and WWII capacity—but today it makes up less than 10% of private-sector employment. “You get richer… you start buying services,” she explained, pointing to the sector’s long decline.
