Employment law seminar proves popular

Around 30 delegates from businesses across Gloucestershire attended a free employment law seminar at Gloucester Rugby Club yesterday (Tuesday).

Substantial changes to employment law will happen in 2025 and Gloucester-based Davies & Partners solicitors wanted to help employers navigate through the new legislation.

The seminar in the Chairman’s Suite gave delegates a better understanding of the latest legal implications on a range of issues, with tips and advice on how to manage situations when they arise in the workplace.

Areas covered included:

  • The new employment law Bill of Rights including zero hour contracts and day one rights
  • Positive obligations for employers on sexual harassment
  • What the future holds for employers under the new government
  • Common mistakes made during the redundancy process and how to avoid them

James Brooks, solicitor at Davies & Partners, said: “The Labour government are making substantial changes to the employment law landscape in 2025 and into 2026 and we just wanted to let local businesses know that you need to change now and we are providing help and support.

“We are intertwined with a lot of the businesses that are attending today and it’s been a pleasure to show them what HR policies you need to think about adapting now and into the future and what pitfalls you can fall into and how Davies & Partners can help.

“I think it’s going to come around quicker than you think and there’s so much change coming that you need to start now to get it right. You don’t want to be retrospectively trying to change things.

“Take your time now, plan, get everything correct. Theres more important things to address like day one rights on unfair dismissal and other things to address such as the positive obligations that have come in to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Those are likely to cost employers who lose those type of cases at tribunal a significant amount of money and we are just trying to protect businesses.

“A lot of the businesses we have here today have been around a long time and by making sure they have the right HR policies in place they are getting the right balance between being a business and being somewhere where someone spends half their life.”
