EU’s €10 Billion Fund Initiative to Propel Tech Startups – News and Statistics

The European Commission has announced plans to establish a public-private fund worth at least €10 billion to support the growth of tech companies in Europe. According to Reuters, this initiative is part of the EU’s strategy to close the innovation gap with the United States and China. The “Choose Europe to start and scale” strategy aims to address the EU’s lack of unicorn companies, which are startups valued at over $1 billion.

The European Union faces several challenges in scaling startups, including fragmented regulations across its 27 member states and limited access to finance, markets, talent, and infrastructure. The IndexBox platform highlights that Europe has a shortage of venture capital for early-stage initiatives, while later-stage financing is significantly dominated by U.S. investment, which is seven times larger.

The Commission plans to launch the “Scaleup Europe Fund” next year, combining public and private investments, with the latter expected to be about four times larger. The fund will invest in promising companies and be managed by a private investment entity, with its exact size yet to be finalized but expected to reach double-digit billion-euro figures.

Moreover, the EU aims to mobilize private savings for business investments through its Savings and Investments Union, which seeks to develop a more robust private pension industry. The strategy also includes simplifying regulations for high-tech startups, enhancing participation in public procurement, and facilitating the entry of non-EU startup founders.
