From Vanaspati to Venture Capital: The Inspiring Wipro Story

At APAC Media’s Founding Stories, we explore the remarkable journeys of companies that reshaped India’s business landscape. One such story is that of Wipro Limited, a global leader in IT services and consulting, which began as a humble vegetable oil manufacturer.

Founded in 1945 by Mohammed Premji in Amalner, Maharashtra, the company was originally called Western India Vegetable Products Limited. Its primary products were vanaspati ghee and refined cooking oil, catering to India’s household needs.

In 1966, following Mohammed Premji’s passing, his 21-year-old son Azim Premji took charge of the business. Despite being one of India’s youngest CEOs at the time, he showed extraordinary vision. Rather than limiting Wipro to consumer goods, Azim Premji steered the company into technology, software development, and IT consulting, sectors that were only beginning to emerge in India.

By the 1980s, Wipro was manufacturing minicomputers and developing software solutions, marking its transformation into an IT powerhouse. Premji’s foresight positioned Wipro as one of the early drivers of India’s digital revolution.

Today, Wipro operates in over 60 countries, offering cutting-edge services in cloud computing, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and enterprise consulting. The brand’s journey from oil tins to AI-driven solutions is a testament to innovation, adaptability, and entrepreneurial resilience.

The Wipro success story illustrates how strong leadership and strategic diversification can transform a family business into a global technology giant. It continues to inspire entrepreneurs, innovators, and business leaders worldwide.
