Addressing childcare needs in Greece could by itself lead to a 3% increase in labor force participation, International Monetary Fund analysts calculated in a recently published study.
Following a key suggestion in all recent IMF reports on Greece, namely that to support the country’s growth rate in the medium term, in view of the demographic problem, labor force participation must increase, the study’s analysts went a step further: They examined the obstacles to this pursuit of greater participation and identified three main ones: childcare responsibilities, skills shortages and tax disincentives.
In their study they propose measures to remove these obstacles.
