Portage ARC Industries Inc.’s “No Ordinary Dog” hot dog stand is far from ordinary.
The sizzling initiative empowers adults with mental disabilities to gain hands-on work experience while raising funds for the organization. Now in its second year, the stand has become a hub of community support, serving up burgers, chilli-topped dogs, and smiles.
Skills, snacks, and second chances
Tara Ryzner, Executive Director of ARC Industries, highlights the program’s dual impact.
“It’s not just fundraising. It’s our way to give participants supportive employment without having to search for it with other organizations. This way, it’s right here. It’s good for them to do,” she says.
The menu has expanded this year to include chilli, burgers, and plans for ice cream and slushies.

Community craves connection
Locals aren’t just hungry for hotdogs—they’re eager to support the participants.
“People tell us they really like the hot dogs [and] enjoy the friendliness of the people,” Ryzner says.
Demand has grown so much that the team is fielding event invitations.
“We’ve been asked to bring our cart to a few activities in the community. We have to get things worked out and set up, but it’s been good.”
Ryzner emphasizes gratitude for the community’s embrace, saying, “A great big thank you for supporting us. It’s been a learning curve and kind of fun doing it.”
With a flavorful menu and growing community partnerships, “No Ordinary Dog” continues to prove that meaningful employment and grassroots fundraising can be a recipe for joy—one hotdog at a time.
The stand currently is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, typically around lunchtime, though exact hours vary. You can find out more on ARC’s facebook page, linked here.
