Opus Major, Paris Gaming Studio, Gets Griffin Seed Funding

Opus Major, a Paris-based gaming studio looking “to make the world jam together” by fusing music and gaming to create “musical adventures,” has received $10 million in financial backing in a seed funding round led by Santa Monica–headquartered venture capital firm Griffin Gaming Partners, joined by its early investor and Paris-based venture firm Alven.

“Music and video games are natural social amplifiers. They bring people together through their own language and interactions,” Griffin said.

Opus Major was formed in 2023 by gaming industry veterans Jean-Nicolas Vernin and Pierre-Armand Nicq with a focus on “crafting games and entertainment where the power of music brings people together.”

Opus Major CEO Vernin co-founded Paris-based mobile gaming studio Madbox, which made the likes of casual game Pocket Champs. Chief creative officer Nicq contributed to different Ubisoft strategic R&D divisions before joining Madbox.

While details about the Opus Major’s first game are still under wraps, the studio is gearing up to this year reveal an exclusive, limited-access first playable version.

Said the duo: “Our mission at Opus Major is to make the world jam together. We have experienced countless joyful memories while playing music and video games with friends. Our original spark came from a simple idea: can we bring them both together and build a great social adventure where music is magic? A multiplayer game where you could form a band of heroes with your friends and save the world through the power of music?”

They call Opus Major more than just a name, namely a vision. “Opus” stands for the firm’s artistic ambition, “a commitment to crafting worlds where creativity flourishes,” they said. “And “major”
represents a vision beyond a single game, with plans to develop “a universe that resonates across
multiple mediums.”
