ADM’s 2025 Global Pet Nutrition Insights Report reveals that pet nutrition continues to evolve as consumers increasingly prioritize their animals’ health through personalized, functional and science-backed solutions.
“The report reiterates a lot of what we know and what our Pet Nutrition team is focused on,” said Jorge Martinez, president of Pet Nutrition at ADM. “Tailored formulations, targeted wellness solutions and our full pantry of ingredients gives ADM the edge to deliver trending pet products for consumers and our customers.”
Consumer priorities shift toward lifelong wellness
According to the report, 85% of pet owners now believe proper nutrition and supplements are as important for pets as they are for humans. This shift in perception is driving product development across categories, with 77% of U.S. pet owners willing to pay more for healthier pet food options.
Pet longevity has emerged as a central concern, with consumers increasingly focused on nutrition that supports healthy aging. The report indicates that pet owners are thinking about how to keep their companions healthy throughout all life stages, from puppies and kittens to senior pets.
“Wellness is a lifelong journey,” the report states, noting that consumer concerns about healthy aging and general wellness have positioned science-backed nutrition as the cornerstone of pet health.
Personalization becomes essential
The one-size-fits-all approach to pet nutrition is rapidly becoming obsolete. The report highlights that in 95% of functional animal health supplement purchases, the product’s specific health benefit claim is the most influential factor in the buying decision.
Species-specific formulations are gaining significant traction as consumers recognize the unique nutritional needs of different pets. This trend includes tailored solutions for different life stages, with particular attention to digestive health and immune support.
As evidence of this functionality-focused approach, the report cites a recent clinical study demonstrating how ADM’s heat-treated postbiotic Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 (PRIOME Gut Health) with Fibersol-2 (Pet Fibersol) supports digestive health in adult cats before and after diet changes.
Quality at accessible price points
While pet health remains non-negotiable for most owners, the report indicates growing price sensitivity in the market. Consumers are increasingly seeking value without compromising on wellness benefits, with many turning to private-label foods that deliver comparable benefits at lower price points.
“Value matters more than ever,” according to the report. “While quality is still a top priority, many pet parents are now seeking smarter ways to shop. They want options that deliver health and nutrition benefits without breaking the bank.”
Claims such as “natural” and “minimally processed” continue to resonate strongly with consumers who are applying their own food preferences to their pets’ diets. The report suggests that pet brands looking to succeed should offer products with recognizable, wholesome ingredients that highlight specific wellness benefits.
Global market stabilizes post-pandemic
As the global market becomes more balanced following the pandemic pet boom, the report notes that pet nutrition continues to show steady growth, though the pattern varies by region. Some areas are experiencing stronger momentum driven by growing awareness of pet wellness and an influx of new brands.
“That loyalty creates space for smart innovation and fresh approaches across categories and geographies,” the report states. “Pet brands that consider consumer concerns about pet longevity and craft solutions geared toward overall pet wellness will gain a competitive edge.”
