The S&P 500 was gaining steam in the final hour of trading.
The market benchmark was up slightly, putting the index on track to close higher and cap off its best month of May since 1990.
The Dow was up 115 points, or 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.4%.
Riskier stocks were still lagging the broader market, with the Invesco S&P 500 High Beta ETF still down 0.7%. But clearly risk-off sentiment was fading as the day went on.
