Stockholm, Sweden, where the central bank recommends that all households have enough cash at home to cover a week’s essential spending

The transition from proper banks to digital banks is nearly complete. Four days ago Santander became the latest bank to announce another round of closures. This time it will shut 95 branches — 21 per cent of the 444 branches it has left in the UK. Of those remaining open, 36 will operate reduced hours and 18 will not have over-the-counter services.

Limited cash usage and online banking is the world we now live in. But while the direction of travel might be right, is the speed of it leaving us vulnerable?

In Sweden, a country that has wholeheartedly embraced digital banking, a new trend is emerging: the one-week cash stash.
