Social Security payments delayed and shocks people — Here you can check if yours is affected

Even though the Social Security Administration (SSA) has been a topic trending of late, it seems like for the first term in 2025, Social Security payments will follow a regular schedule this April. While some citizens are expecting to receive larger Social Security checks than before, there are still concerns that the Trump Administration’s mass cuts of the Social Security Administration staff could lead to payment delays for many.

Citizens need to remember that payments for most recipients would come out on the scheduled Wednesdays during the month.

When can citizens expect to receive April payments?

About 68 million Americans will receive Social Security benefits every month, and this includes retirees, survivors of deceased workers, people with limited resources, disabled workers, the blind, and dependents. The average Social Security retirement benefit that recipients expect to receive is about $1,931.

The Social Security payment date for each citizen is determined by the citizen’s birthdate. Citizens who were born between the 1st and 10th of the month can expect their Social Security benefits on the second Wednesday of every month. This means citizens born between the 1st and the 10th of the month received payment on April 9, 2025.

Citizens born between the 11th and 20th of the month can expect to receive Social Security payments on the third Wednesday of the month. This means citizens born between the 11th and 20th of the month will receive payments on April 16, 2025.

Citizens born between the 21st and 31st of the month receive Social Security payments every fourth Wednesday of the month and receive their payments on April 23, 2025.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will be received by citizens on the 1st of the month. The exception to the rule is those citizens who receive SSI payments and Social Security benefits, and those who claimed Social Security before May 1997 will receive their benefits on April 3, 2025. You can find out if your Social Security payment is late by checking the SSA payment schedule.

Reasons for higher Social Security payments in April

Some people will receive a larger Social Security payment from the SSA this month. This is because SSA will be sending 3 million in checks during April due to the Social Security Fairness Act, as per the law signed in January. This means that payment amounts will have to be recalculated for certain citizens.

Retroactive payments due to the elimination of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) have been sent to citizens already. However, higher monthly payments will go out throughout April 2025. Citizens previously affected by the WEP provision will receive, on average, a $360 increase in monthly checks. Spouses affected by the GPO will receive a $1,190 raise on average payment amounts.

Those who qualify for higher payments will receive this payment adjustment automatically and won’t need to do anything to achieve these increased Social Security benefits.

Staying abreast of the Social Security payment schedule

The Social Security payment schedule outlines the SSA 2025 payment dates. By viewing the calendar, citizens will know that June SSI payments will be sent out on May 30, 2025. Citizens can also learn more about their payment status and the details of their payment by creating a “My Social Security” account at SSA.gov.

Those who think that their money is missing can reach out to the Social Security Administration (SSA). SSA representatives are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is recommended that citizens wait for three mailing days before reporting any missing payments. The good news is that most of the April Social Security payments will follow the regular distribution schedule, however, there is still uncertainty as to whether Social Security’s upcoming change in April will cause some upsets to the regular payment schedule. Any disruptions in April remain yet to be seen.
