Cwmbran’s next Curious Community event will shine a spotlight on investment – with two entrepreneurs from the town who’ve appeared from BBC1’s Dragons’ Den programme.
On Wednesday 17 June at 5pm, the Parkway Hotel will host a conversation about Investment vs ‘Investmeant’, exploring why the most powerful investments in business aren’t always financial – and why the things that truly move founders forward often can’t be measured on a balance sheet.
Among the speakers are Kelli Aspland and Laura Waters, co‑founders of Solar Buddies, the Cwmbran‑born business that created the world’s first child‑friendly, refillable sunscreen applicator.
The pair famously secured investment on BBC’s Dragons’ Den from Debra Meaden and Peter Jones. The two Dragons each paid £40,000 for a ten per cent share of the business based on Avondale Industrial Estate
Curious Community organisers say this month’s theme challenges the traditional view of investment with it sometimes meaning backing “people, time, ideas, confidence, founders or communities”.
Kelli and Laura will be joined on the panel by Adam Thomas‑Brown, the founder and general partner of Mentra Ventures whose mission is to “uncover, invest in, and incubate the very best of the Welsh early-stage ecosystem, transforming Wales’ startup landscape on a scale never seen before.”
