The Downtown Barrie BIA was proud to recently host a group of high school business students for an engaging and educational walking tour through the heart of our city.
The initiative was designed to offer students a real-world glimpse into the dynamics of local entrepreneurship, community building, and civic engagement.
Students had the opportunity to visit a selection of unique and thriving local businesses, including Shop Blueberry Moon, Homestead Artisan Bakery, John Linkert Salon, and Lotus Lane.
Business owners welcomed the students into their shops and generously shared their personal stories, insights into running a small business, and the challenges and rewards of being an entrepreneur in a vibrant downtown setting.
The tour also highlighted downtown Barrie’s rich cultural landscape, with a guided exploration of several public murals anchored by Clandestinos Art. These celebrated installations served as both a visual feast and a conversation starter about the role of public art in shaping identity and community pride.
The day concluded at Barrie City Hall, where students engaged in a thoughtful and inspiring conversation with Ward 2 Coun. Craig Nixon.
Coun. Nixon spoke candidly about civic leadership, the importance of active participation in local democracy, and the value of youth voices in shaping the future of the city.
“It was a pleasure to meet with such engaged and curious students. Their questions showed genuine interest not just in business, but in the broader community that supports it. Downtown Barrie is a living classroom, and this experience is a perfect example of how partnerships between education, business, and local government can spark meaningful learning and connection,” said Nixon.
The Downtown Barrie BIA extends sincere thanks to the participating businesses and to Coun. Nixon for their time, openness, and hospitality. The tour was a meaningful experience for all involved and a strong example of how collaborative efforts can inspire and empower the next generation of leaders.
