Research Hub with Supercomputers Support for developing startup chatbots

The European Union (EU) has decided to establish an AI factory equipped with a supercomputer to support training and development of artificial intelligence (AI) models.
According to the European Commission on the 10th (local time), the European High Performance Computing Joint Project Group (EuroHPC) selected seven projects to establish AI factories.
The AI factory is expected to serve as a research hub by providing supercomputers, data, and manpower necessary for startups to train AI models. The EU aims to build AI factories throughout Europe to allow local companies to develop their own chatbot models against open AI.
Training AI models requires vast computing power. The EU’s ambition is to have such capabilities without relying on US big tech companies.
Seven AI factories were selected, including Barcelona, Spain, Bologna, Italy, Kazaniemi, Finland, Vissen, Luxembourg, Rinsheping, Sweden, Stuttgart, Germany, and Athens, Greece.
There are a total of 15 countries participating in the project. Portugal, Romania and Turkiye will join the Barcelona project, while Austria and Slovenia will join the Bologna project. Five countries – the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland – will participate in the Kazaniemi project. Barcelona, Bologna, and Kazaniemi are regions that already have supercomputers.
A total of 1.5 billion euros (about 2.26 trillion won) will be invested in the seven projects. Half of this, 750 million euros, is supported by the EU, and the other half is shared by each member state.
Other member states are also considering joining seven projects or establishing a new AI plant. EuroHPC will receive additional proposals by February 1 next year.
