The sky’s the limit! NHS Trusts back Good Employment Charter

In a new video (below) from Southmead Hospital’s helipad, Mayor Dan Norris and dozens of NHS workers have announced a major new milestone for the West of England Good Employment Charter.

With both North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) now signed up as supporters, some 62,000 workers are now covered by the Charter’s commitment to staff engagement, health & wellbeing, and career development.

By pledging to meet standards around good quality jobs, almost 250 participating organisations have become recognised as employers of choice. These benefits boost staff retention, recruitment and productivity, supporting higher growth and contributing to a thriving economy in the region.

Dan Norris, the Mayor of the West of England, who launched the scheme in 2022, said:

“Our NHS workers do so much for us and our families. Like all workers, they deserve good working conditions – including the chance to get on.

“I’m delighted that two major NHS trusts in our region have signed up. As some of the West’s largest employers, they have almost doubled the number of workers supported under my initiative, showing that the sky really is the limit for the Good Employment Charter.

“However big or small, I encourage all employers to reach out to our team to follow in the NHS’ footsteps by visiting GoodEmploymentCharter.co.uk

Maria Kane, Joint Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“I’m really thrilled that North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust have both signed up to support the Good Employment Charter.

“At both organisations, we’re committed to providing the best experience possible for our colleagues, as well as giving opportunities to our local communities, including work experience.

“Together, at both organisations we are creating a culture where people feel valued, included, supported, and inspired — where staff experience and patient care go hand in hand. Being supporters of the Good Employment Charter signifies our commitment to each Trust being an employer of choice.”

Ingrid Barker, Joint Chair of North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“I’m delighted that both Trusts are supporting the Good Employment Charter.

“NBT and UHBW are huge local employers, and ensuring we’re great places to work is incredibly important to us.

“Being a supporter of the Charter builds on the great work we’re already doing and gives us a focus on some of the areas where we can do more.”
