The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $148K in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, production failed to regain momentum.
Imports
United Kingdom’s Imports of Methanol (Methyl Alcohol)
In 2024, approx. 347K tons of methanol (methyl alcohol) were imported into the UK; jumping by 53% compared with the year before. The Netherlands (137K tons), Belgium (78K tons) and the United States (12K tons) were the main suppliers of methanol imports to the UK, together comprising 100% of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +68.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest methanol suppliers to the UK were the Netherlands ($44M), Belgium ($24M) and the United States ($2.6M), together comprising 98% of total imports.
The United States, with a CAGR of +54.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices By Country
In 2023, the average methanol import price amounted to $314 per ton, falling by -11.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $466 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($394 per ton), while the price for the United States ($208 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports By Country
Ireland (1.2K tons), the Netherlands (793 tons) and Poland (566 tons) were the main destinations of methanol exports from the UK, together accounting for 39% of total exports. Tunisia, France, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bangladesh, South Africa and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($1.9M), Poland ($1M) and Ireland ($856K) appeared to be the largest markets for methanol exported from the UK worldwide, with a combined 55% share of total exports. France, South Africa, Belgium, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Azerbaijan and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +104.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
In 2023, the average methanol export price amounted to $1,045 per ton, reducing by -40.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,765 per ton in 2022, and then fell markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($2,898 per ton), while the average price for exports to Tunisia ($524 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
