Year of progress for employment partnership

1 month ago

Work and Thrive Newcastle, an employment partnership in the city led by the city council, has committed to supporting more residents than ever into new and better career opportunities.

That was the message as Work and Thrive partners came together for the programme’s second annual review, with partnership members assembling at the City Library on Thursday (13 March) to celebrate their success over the last 12 months.

Work and Thrive Newcastle helps residents develop skills and find job opportunities in the city, supports employers to fill vacancies, and promotes better jobs and employment support within communities.

Among the achievements over the last year, guests at the partnership review heard how Work and Thrive has:

  • Signed up more employers to commit to paying the Real Living Wage;
  • Brought together more than 70 employers and nearly 1200 jobseekers through its annual jobs fair;
  • Arranged 3,400 customer appointments to provide employment and skills support and advice;
  • Helped more than 1000 residents improve their English speaking and comprehension through its new English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) service;
  • Supported more than 100 people into employment or self-employment through its Talent Pools and Pathways project.

Cllr Dan Greenhough, Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Economy, Jobs and Skills, said: “Work and Thrive Newcastle is still a new entity but it’s fantastic to see the progress being made to connect employers with people looking for new career opportunities and help residents improve their employability.

“The dedication of the partners involved is evident in the results the partnership has already amassed, and it’s achieving what it set out to do in terms of helping our communities access new and better jobs and making Newcastle a better place to live and work.
