Young entrepreneurs wanted in Northumberland

The Business & Entrepreneurship Centre Northumberland (BECN) is looking for ‘kidpreneurs’ to particpate in its ‘My Future My Career’ program.

My Future My Career is a fun, free, hands-on program for children ages 8-14 to help them launch their very own summer business. Young entrepreneurs can apply to receive business mentorship and a micro grant of up to $500 to help with startup expenses such as materials, advertising, and equipment, or to support the growth of an existing business.

This program is unique to Northumberland County, and since launching in 2021 the program has helped 45 youths explore the exciting world of entrepreneurship. This year, participants will also have the chance to shine in the spotlight at two exciting community events:

  • Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase at Staples Cobourg:
    Wednesday, August 13
    11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Youth Day at the Cobourg Farmers’ Market:
    Saturday, August 23
    9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

These events are a real-world opportunity for young business owners to connect with customers, get feedback, and build confidence. At these events, the community will get to see the next generation of business talent in action. In the past, participating businesses have included handmade crafts and jewellery, emotional support journals, lawncare services, and wooden home décor and bird houses.

“The My Future My Career program helps young entrepreneurs take real steps toward starting a business — and have fun doing it,” says the County’s Business Development Coordinator Kailyn Coupland. “The program plants the seed of entrepreneurship early and teaches young people important real-world skills they will carry with them for life, including creativity, independence, confidence and financial management. Many past participants have continued to grow their businesses after the program concluded – it’s always inspiring to watch the spark of an idea turn into a thriving local business.”
