DWP axing major benefit from this weekend

Tax Credits will be axed by the Department for Work and Pensions from this weekend.

The DWP is in the process of moving Tax Credit claimants to Universal Credit or Pension Credit.

It is understood that most claimants have now made the move across.

But a ‘very small’ number of people not eligible for Universal Credit or Pension Credit will see their Tax Credit payments come to an end on April 5.

Tax Credits, as well as some older legacy benefits, are ending and being replaced by Universal Credit – or Pension Credit in some cases.

Gov.uk says: “Tax credits end on April 5, 2025. No more payments will be made after that.

“You’ll be sent a letter if you are eligible for Universal Credit or Pension Credit instead.”

The department has been sending ‘migration notices’ in the post, with claimants required to make a claim for Universal Credit by the date shown in their letter.

You could lose out if you do not apply as the process is not automatic.

Benefits being replaced are:

Gov.uk says: “Many people will be eligible for at least the same amount on Universal Credit as their previous benefit.

“If your Universal Credit entitlement is less than your previous tax credits or benefits then you may be eligible for financial protection when you move to Universal Credit.

“This additional amount is known as ‘transitional protection’.”
