Not every success story begins with a massive investment or corporate backing. Sometimes, it starts in a small grocery shop in rural India with nothing more than hard work, vision, and grit. Sanjeev and Rajeev Gupta grew up in Gulaothi, a small town near Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, where their father ran a modest grocery shop. Watching his daily struggles left a lasting impression on the brothers and ignited a desire to build something greater. Determined to change their circumstances, they moved to Ghaziabad in pursuit of better opportunities.
They began by buying air coolers on credit from wholesalers and selling them for a small profit. In the early days, the two travelled door-to-door on a single scooter to meet dealers in Faridabad. As their efforts started to pay off, they invested in a better vehicle, symbolising the first small milestone in a long journey.
In 1992, the brothers borrowed Rs 25,000 from friends and took a leap of faith; they began manufacturing their own coolers and introduced their brand, Summercool. Their first cooler was priced at Rs 1,600. Initially, it was difficult to win the trust of customers and large retailers, many of whom were reluctant to stock an unknown brand.
Yet the coolers stood out as they were affordable, reliable, and well-received through word-of-mouth. Slowly but surely, the brand earned customer loyalty. Within ten years, Summercool was growing at 50 times the rate annually, a testament to their focus on quality and after-sales service.
In 2005, disaster struck when a fire damaged one of their manufacturing units, leading to substantial financial loss. But thanks to the goodwill they had built, distributors stepped up by paying in advance, and suppliers extended credit. This unwavering support helped the Guptas revive their operations quickly. Today, Summercool manufactures over 1 lakh (100,000) products each month. The business model remains refreshingly simple: 80% of their product range (excluding LED TVs and washing machines) is made in-house, and 90% of their sales come through offline retail channels.
Over time, their portfolio expanded well beyond air coolers. Today, the brand offers ceiling fans, exhaust fans, room heaters, LED TVs, kitchen appliances, and other fast-moving consumer electronics. Based in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, the company runs four modern factories and employs around 200 people. They have a presence in 17 states with 250 distributors, and their products are available in nearly 4,000 stores across India. Online marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart now contribute around 10% to their overall business.
