Apple has agreed to acquire Ascend.io, a startup that bills itself as the first platform for “agentic data engineering,” according to a filing published on the European Union’s List of Acquisitions under the Digital Markets Act.
The disclosure identifies the target as Ascension Labs, Inc., the legal entity behind Ascend.io. Apple will take on a non-exclusive license to the startup’s intellectual property and will be assigned certain of its patents, and it holds the right to “make employment offers to and hire certain employees” at the company.
The structure points to an acquihire, in which the buyer’s main interest is the engineering team rather than a continuing product line. Ascend.io’s website now carries a note saying the company is “winding down operations as we prepare for our next great adventure.”
Founded in 2015, Ascend.io built its business around software agents that handle routine work across the data engineering lifecycle, from data ingestion through transformation and orchestration. In a message posted on its site, the company framed the sale as the close of a decade-long effort: “For the past ten years we pursued a singular mission: Make Data Engineering Delightful.”
The EU filing rules require Apple to report acquisitions above a certain size, giving outside observers a periodic view of a dealmaking program the company otherwise keeps quiet. The Ascend.io purchase follows another Apple agreement this month with an AI startup whose technology lets musicians rework recorded music.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed in the filing.
