Meta has announced a major expansion of its Eagle Mountain Data Center in Utah, with a total investment of more than $3 billion and a workforce of more than 1,200 construction workers and 300 permanent employees. As a result, the tech giant is investing significant resources in community infrastructure, education and water stewardship, in addition to facility expansion. Since breaking ground in 2018, the Eagle Mountain Data Center expansion is a testament to Meta’s long-term commitment to Utah communities. Meta has contributed $450,000 to the Walden Park Astronomy Park, which is the first of its kind, bringing the total contribution to $700,000. Scope on the Eagle Mountain Data Center Investment
Meta is donating $1.5 million to the Lake Mountain Education Foundation and will continue to provide $50,000 annually to support student learning programs. In particular, early childhood literacy programs are a priority for the district. In addition, the investment in the Eagle Mountain Data Center is part of Meta’s $1 billion Future Is for Everyone Fund pledge to communities where it operates data centers. To date, Meta has contributed over $6.2 million to local schools and organizations throughout Eagle Mountain. The company also contributed $4.85 million to Eagle Mountain City’s Affordable Housing Fund, which provides mortgage assistance to 66 local families. Furthermore, Meta has spent more than $50 million on local infrastructure improvements, such as roads and water infrastructure.
Eagle Mountain Data Center Prioritizes Water Stewardship and Clean Energy
The project is powered by water-efficient closed-loop liquid cooling systems and dry cooling systems that do not use water during operation for cooling. In particular, annual water use is expected to be less than one average regional golf course. In addition, Meta is collaborating on water restoration initiatives such as Hobble Creek Flow Restoration and Provo River Flow Restoration, which will restore more than 726 million gallons of water per year.
Meta’s vision is to become water positive by 2030, restoring more water than used globally. In addition, the company used the cooling water from its servers to water Cory Wride Memorial Park, a major recreational community asset. Furthermore, the electricity consumed by the project is matched with 100% clean and renewable energy, and Meta has installed more than 1.7 gigawatts of clean and renewable energy in 13 Utah locations.
